We thought Southport, SC was really nice but nothing beats the hospitality of Elizabeth City. The city is the gateway to the Dismal Swamp. I suppose they want you to feel real good before entering the swamp in case this is the last anyone sees of you. We were fortunate not to get attacked by the hoards of monkies and charging hippos. The idea of the Dismal Swamp was first envisioned by George Washington who needed a better way to transport troops and supplies from North to South. Some years later it was hand dug by slaves a d ironically was used even later as part of the underground railway, transporting runaway slaves as ran toward freedom in the North.
After passing through two locks, we exited the Swamp and stopped at the city dock in Portsmouth, VA, another historic city and home to a LOT of Naval activity. We stayed a couple days at the city dock (because it was free) and we are still having problems with our darn generator. I’ll never buy a boat again with a built-in generator.
Tomorrow we leave for Norfolk where Diane and Mocha will stay at a nice marina while I fly back for a trial. I hope to find a good mechanic that can fix the generator.
